My Roku 3 arrived yesterday and was eager to hook it up. Unfortunately I experienced the ever annoying error codes 013 and 014 when trying to connect it to the Internet. Browsing all the forums and the best that Google could do did not solve my problem. As a result I ended up calling their support line and they gave me the instructions to access the 'secret' screens.
The problem is related to outdated software on the Roku which restricts it from connecting whether via wireless or wired.
1. Update Software: On your remote please press the house 5 times, press the fast foward 3 times, then press rewind 2 times. You will get a secret screen, There you have to check your IP address that it is not all 0's. Select the option to update software. The Roku player should now restart.
2. Disable Ping: Once that the roku finish the set up, on the remote please press the Home button 5 times, then the Fast Forward (>>) button 1 time, then the Play button 1 time, then the Rewind (<<) button 1 time, then the Play button 1 time, and then hit the Fast Forward (>>) button 1 time.
This will take you to the Platform secret screen. There you have to find the option to disable network ping. Select it and go back to the set up process of the roku player.
That should do it.
Annoying but works.

Thank you sooooo much you are my hero!!!
Thanks for your post. Crazy that they ship the thing non-functional
Thank you for posting this, my Roku 2 is now working. I was getting the 013 error code. Roku support forums where no help, searched all kinds of other forums read all kinds of suggestions but no fixes, lots of other people having the same people most of them end up sending back their devices back thinking they were defective. In 2 simple steps you solved my problem. Wonder why they don't have the same suggestions on Roku.com or right in the instructions... ridiculous...
Thanks Again!
This worked great. Thanks a lot.
What happens if the IP actually is all zeros. I cannot seem to find a way to input my wireless gateway's IP
I did get to the secret screen, but how do I resolve the problem of not connecting if the IP address DOES show as all zeros?
That's totally ridiculous but it does in fact work. Just did it and it solved my issue.
You are a gentleman and a scholar. There are more goodies in there than just the "disable pings" option. Like the "interference migration" setting. So you can finally run your roku remote wifi connection and your home wifi network on different channels. Thanks for posting!!

Brilliant! Not sure what genius at the company decided to do it this way but I hope they never have another idea again. Thanks for the help.
Great! thanks for posting
Thanks Paul
Thanks
OMG thank you so much!!! I have been trying to fix this for hours using numerous methods online and nothing worked until this. Yay!!!
Thank you so much. After hours of trying everything online I came across this info and it finally worked. you're a lifesaver!
Saved me man.. you area a real genius
Thanks, Paul! Couldn't have done it without your help. Can't believe they ship the product that way, but it was only the first two of numerous problems I ran into during setup/install. Hopefully the service works much, much better or the box is going back.
Pete
you are awesome! Thank you very much for this post!
I would have paid for this information.
Worked perfectly.
My roku 3 is now connected.
Thanks
Worked perfectly!
Thanks for the post.
Very helpful! Good to go now. Thanks for posting.
would the same procedure apply for an error code 001 ???
Thank you! I spent about 30 mins reading forum posts about people complaining but no real solution. This worked great!
Hi Paul,
How do I update the software without a connection? I've got a Roku 3 which has a valid IP assigned via the router DHCP. It is assigned over Ethernet (I think, since I've purposefully not put in a wifi password).
Kind of feels like a chicken and egg thing to me. I can't update my s/w without connecting. And I connect without updating my s/w!
Does this make sense to you? Please help out.
Regards,
Kartikeya
Why wouldn't Roku.com just post this information on their support site?!? *smacking my head silly*
Thanks man, you're a service to mankind.
Thank you! Thank you! It was driving us nuts. The forums wasn't helping and we couldn't get through to support.
Thank you so much. Worked right away. I spent hours trying to find what was wrong and nothing worked until I came across this website.
Thank you!!!
Connected fine and updated Roku 2xs and able to access channels on first try. Then....had to reboot router for unrelated DSL issue (My DSL gets squirrely and once a month rebooting modem/router fixes my connection issues) I could no longer connect to my Roku. Tried rebooting modem/router/roku...no luck, If I did factory reset on Roku and it reconnected but had to reregister Roku and let it update and install my channels all over again. All was good then....power flickered and modem/router rebooted again Roku unable to connect. Followed your advice. Have a d-link dir-655 router and into wireless setup and disabled channel auto scan and set it to stay on channel 1. Router rebooted to save change and now Roku found and logged into wireless network. Easy fix. Why doesn't Roku tech support solve this issue as 3 laptops, 3 tablets, and 3 phones don't have issues with router which I have been using for 4-5 years. Thanks.
This worked great! Thanks for saving us so much time.
Thanks! That worked. Thank you for writing this up!
given all that i had tried, i had such little hope when trying your advice. after all, when i said to update, it said it was updating to the same version it already had. i did it anyway.
it worked.
wow.
thanks!
This was just what I needed. The Software update was needed and worked flawlessly. On restart, it was as if the last 40 minutes had never existed for me.
Keep up the good work.
Got a ROKU 2 XS (April 2014), followed your advice and only had to do the update, it re-set the system and I followed the on screen instructions, registered and it works a treat, thank you so much, your an angel!
Crazy, but it worked. thanks!
thanks so much, this totally worked for me after hours of pulling my hair out, cheers dude
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been searching Google for over a week, tried every hotspot program, ICS, EVERYTHING and all it was was disabling the F#&&ING PINGS!!!! THANKS!!!!!
Wow, I tried everything and your solution is the only one that worked. THANK YOU! I wish I'd found your site first!
just did a factory reset and set every up again, works great!!! but will keep your information in mind the next times this error code 013 comes up.
I have done the first secret screen but it tells me I cant do an update because I have no network connection. how do I do fix the error if I cant to the update?
Thanks a lot - finally worked on one TV. Now have to try the same thing in the other TV. Quite a long process but hopefully worth it. I had to tell the Roku support how to do it from your website (about disabling pings)!!
Thanks a lot Paul! It was a long process and I had to contact Roku in between. I had to tell them about disabling pings from your website to get it to work!

I can not connect to the wireless or wired network so I can not update. Step 2 does not work on my two roku 3 boxes. Might visit the skip to throw away this that and get me a Sky subscription. What a shame, started out well worked for a month then seemingly died. Have tried Everything.
Seen this post at the same time i was on the phone with ROKU SUPPORT. And they told me to do the SAME THING that this post told us ALL to do ! Thanks for getting this answer to SO MANY PEOPLE
you legend... thank you very much.. have a nice day sir
Thanks Dude, after wasting the afternoon trying to get it working, your page helped sort it.
Very much appreciated!
shawn
my ip 0.0.0.0 i cant change it..please help
This would be really helpful if it could be done from the pre set up screen. Honestly just a waste of time making a fool of yourself pushing buttons trying to combo your way to the right menu. Thanks for nothing.
Thanks so much! You just made my day!
I don't get it. I have an IP address, but keep getting error code 0130.50 (yes, .50). Tried the secret screen stuff, but I couldn't update because I couldn't connect to the internet. If error code 013 means can't connect, how in the world are all you folks connecting to the internet to update your device so you won't get error code 013?
You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar...worked where all their forums and blog solutions didn't...it was only here that I read you had to update software first on the secret screen...thank you once again
thanks it worked!
Please Help, if the IP address is all zeros...how to input correct IP address?
Thank you SO much for this!! It worked like a charm!
You are a star. It was driving me crazy. Thank you
Thank you so much finally through your careful steps I have resolved the 013.50 error on my Roku 2 all working perfectly on the Ethernet connection now
Graham
This was Awesome, THANK YOU!
My girlfriend was struggling to set Roku 3 up straight out of the box (she's a tech fiend) and was getting really annoyed.
